VO₂max is the maximum volume of oxygen the cardiovascular-respiratory system can deliver to the muscles per minute. It is the ceiling of aerobic power — the number that defines how big the aerobic engine actually is. Every adaptation from aerobic training is ultimately working toward raising this ceiling.
Horses are extraordinary aerobic athletes. An elite thoroughbred can reach 200+ ml/kg/min — approximately three times the VO₂max of a world-class human endurance runner. Both sprinters and distance horses need a high VO₂max. The sprinter needs it to clear lactate between race efforts and recover between training sessions. The distance horse needs it to sustain pace.
Primarily cardiac output (heart size × stroke volume × rate) and the muscle's capacity to extract and use oxygen. Training improves both — but cardiac output is the dominant constraint.
A large heart (high Heart Score) provides the structural capacity. But VO₂max also depends on aerobic enzyme capacity and vascular density — a big heart only helps if the muscles are trained to use it.
"If VO₂max is the ceiling of what your horse can do aerobically — when did you last do training specifically designed to raise that ceiling, versus training that just uses the ceiling that already exists?"
V200 — the speed at which your horse reaches 200 bpm on the heart rate monitor — is your practical, field-ready proxy for VO₂max. Watch it rise week over week. That rising number is proof the aerobic ceiling is lifting. Every other performance improvement follows from it.
Here is the single most important difference between horses and humans that every trainer should know: a horse reaches full VO₂max in approximately 40–45 seconds. An elite human cyclist takes 2–3 minutes. An average fit person takes 4+ minutes.
What this means in practice: Even a 1000m sprint horse is approximately 70–75% aerobic — the aerobic engine is fully online by the time the horse has run the first 250–300m. The aerobic system dominates from very early in every race at every distance.
Training implication: A 45-second quality gallop delivers a full VO₂max stimulus in a horse. You do not need long intervals like human athletes. But because the horse reaches VO₂max so quickly, the race-deciding question becomes: how long can the horse hold that ceiling? — which leads directly to T-Lim vVO₂max (see Week 5).
A strong aerobic base does far more than power endurance performance. It is the platform that determines how much quality training a horse can absorb per week without breaking down. This concept is why elite programmes invest so heavily in base work — not because base work alone wins races, but because it creates the capacity to train harder, more often, and more safely.
The mechanism: a large aerobic engine accelerates lactate clearance from muscle tissue after hard efforts, reconstitutes phosphocreatine faster between repeat efforts, and replenishes glycogen more rapidly in the 24–48 hours after a session. The horse is ready sooner. The next training session lands on a better-prepared system.
A horse with a VO₂max of 180 ml/kg/min can clear the same lactate load significantly faster than a horse at 140 ml/kg/min. Over a season, that difference computes to more quality sessions completed without overtraining.
Two horses doing identical track work: the one with the bigger aerobic base arrives at each session more recovered, absorbs more adaptation, and accumulates less fatigue debt. By Week 8, the gap is large.
"Think of the horse in your stable who recovers fastest after a hard gallop. Is that coincidence — or is it the horse with the biggest aerobic engine you've built over time?"
Aerobic base work is not 'fitness maintenance' — it is training capacity investment. Every hour of quality base work you do now increases the amount of high-intensity work your horse can productively absorb later. This is the concept that turns a good preparation into a great one.
