Protocol Structure

DAY 1 Warm-up 10 min @ 13–15 km/h · Walk 1 min · single test step · 3 min duration → collect lactate. Use result to set Day 2 velocities. Typical older horse: 30 km/h
DAY 2 Two middle velocities (V2 lower, V3 higher) · 3 min each step · 1 min rest between steps → collect lactate + HR at each. Typical older horse: 36 & 39 km/h
DAY 3 V4 = second-slowest (excitement check vs Day 1/2) · V5 = fastest (upper bracket) · 3 min each step · 1 min rest between steps. Typical older horse: 33 & 42 km/h
DAY 4 Optional — one high-velocity step (V6 only) if VLa4 unresolved after Day 3 · 3 min duration · 1 min rest before. Typical older horse: 45 km/h
